Circuit City announced today that they would be closing their doors permanently. Apparently they gave their 34,000 employees 60 days notice, and those that had their jobs terminated earlier were given 60 days pay. James Marcum, CEO of Circuit City said "We were unable to reach an agreement with our creditors and lenders to structure a going-concern transaction in the limited timeframe available, and so this is the only possible path for our company."
Reading and watching the news earlier, I couldn't help but wonder "Are people in America going to miss Circuit City?" It is extremely unfortunate hearing of the huge job losses involved, and I'm sure we all feel for the families of those affected. However honestly I can't remember the last time I made a purchase at a Circuit City store. With all of the great deals online, why pay more for something at a store? Does anyone out there feel they are going to miss shopping at Circuit City?
Are electronics stores going the way of music stores? Will we see a day when everyone buys online from sellers like Amazon? I don't think so. With electronics, unlike music, you have a tangible product. Many people will still want to go to a store and physically see the products before making a decision. On the flip side, there are those (myself included) who make a large percentage of their buying decisions by reading reviews online. When I'm looking for a book for example, I usually read reviews on Amazon and order based on other peoples feedback. These reviews are a huge confidence booster for me when I want the best possible book on a certain topic. The only time I go to a store is when I need something right away. What do you think? Do you prefer shopping online or in stores for electronics items?
